The UN Comtrade series is an import-based proxy and should be interpreted as indicative rather than a complete measure of domestic vehicle sales. Recent months are often incomplete because of reporting lags and revisions. Import-based estimates can materially understate true sales in countries with large domestic vehicle manufacturing, and can also be distorted in economies with high re-export or transshipment activity, where imported EV or ICE vehicles are subsequently shipped to other markets.
